Introduction

What is ideaMatrix?

IdeaMatrix is a free-form "sticky notes" database for the RIM BlackBerry devices that enables the efficient management of an unlimited number of ideas and notes, organized by an unlimited number of folders and categories.  Free-form search capabilities are provided, allowing the user to find data quickly and efficiently.  ideaMatrix is a personal information manager (PIM) for all the stuff that doesn't fit on your calendar or task / to-do lists.

What is todoMatrix?

todoMatrix is a world-class to-do / tasks manager for the BlackBerry. Users can manage unlimited projects and sub-projects, keep track to whom assignments were given and when with the delegate subsystem, stay on top of deadlines with highly-flexible reminder and snooze alert functions, and sort and view tasks by a wide-variety of fields, priorities, and dates.

What is REXdesktop?

REXdesktop.com offers internet browser access to a user's todoMatrix or ideaMatrix data by connecting to REXwireless servers.  Users must logon with their registered e-mail address and password.  Multiple sessions are permitted, allowing a person's executive assistant access to the data, if desired, without disturbing the primary user's operations.  Data is synchronized wirelessly between the servers and a person's BlackBerry.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

Is the REXdesktop service free?

No. REXdesktop is included for one year with the purchase of todoMatrix or ideaMatrix licenses purchased on or before June 15, 2007. Because REXdesktop was released in December 2006, anyone that purchased our applications in 2006 will receive complimentary access for all of 2007. If a person licensed todoMatrix and ideaMatrix at separate times, one year of time is added to each application's available access time. Starting on June 16, 2007, complimentary REXdesktop will be included for six months before the annual fee is due.

Access in subsequent years are currently priced at $24 (U.S.) per year ($2 per month), prepaid annually. The one REXdesktop fee includes access to both todoMatrix and ideaMatrix data if a person has licensed both applications.

Grandfathered REXdesktop pricing:

As long as a person renews without lapsing, he or she will be grandfathered in at their original price and the fee will not go up - we really hate price creep and we won't do that to our customers. The annual price may increase in the future. If there is an increase, it will not affect users that licensed their applications before the price increase date, just as long as they do not let their REXdesktop subscription lapse.

If someone does lapse, they will be able to rejoin at the published rates at the time they rejoin. Please note that our prices and length of included time may change sometime in the future but anyone grandfathered-in at a specific price (determined by the day they licensed the software) will not be affected.

Must a person use REXdesktop or is it optional?

REXdesktop is optional and intended for users that prefer a full keyboard / PC monitor interface to their data.  todoMatrix and ideaMatrix will continue to work well without requiring REXdesktop.  REXwireless will continue to offer complimentary Always*Safe web backup for anyone that does not choose the REXdesktop web access option.

Please note that some future features, most notably import / export to and from external programs (and therefore the Microsoft Outlook interface) will work via REXdesktop and will be available only to REXdesktop subscribers.

Absolutely.  Free trials are available on all REXwireless software products.

How do I install REXwireless BlackBerry-resident software?

The easiest way to install our software "over-the-air" is by using your BlackBerry web browser.  It is important that the browser is set to the default "BlackBerry" emulation setting in the BlackBerry browser options.  This ensures that our download server sends you to the correct page for your device.

Another alternative is to use your PC and download the software via USB cable to your BlackBerry.  The PC that you use must have the BlackBerry drivers / BlackBerry desktop manager CD-ROM installed.

In both cases, point the browser to:
http://www.REXwireless.com/download.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

What devices does REXwireless software work on?

REXwireless applications are available for RIM BlackBerry devices that are using BlackBerry Operating System (OS) 4.0 or greater.  In general, this includes all modern BlackBerry units with color screens.  Check your BlackBerry Options / Status screen to determine your operating system level.  Often, operating system upgrades are available from service carriers such as AT&T Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon, Vodafone, and so forth without charge, if you find that your device is on back-level OS software.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

How do I install REXdesktop on my PC or Mac?

REXdesktop is a web server based application, with no software to install on your computer.  Simply point your Microsoft IE 6/7 browser or Mozilla Firefox 2 browser to http://REXdesktop.com and logon.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

How does REXdesktop synchronize data with the BlackBerry-resident Matrix applications?

When you log on, the REXdesktop server application "checks out" your databases from secure storage and loads the data into memory.  Every time you change the data, the server saves the changed data fields back to secure storage. Data is not stored on your local computer.

The BlackBerry applications check in with the server periodically to see if there have been any changes.  If there are changes, the application synchronizes its data with the server.  A user can synchronize immediately by choosing the "sync now" menu option on the BlackBerry application.

What is Always*Safe wireless backup?

REXwireless offers a complimentary wireless backup service called Always*Safe.  Always*Safe allows users to recover their database in case of BlackBerry damage or loss.  Always*Safe also allows a person to upgrade to a new BlackBerry device and recover their data on the new unit.

Please note that communications must be working well for Always*Safe to work.  This includes communications being "allowed" to our wwrex.com servers in your firewall software and your connections subsection, found under Application Permissions, which is in BlackBerry Options / Security.  You may check your Backup Status to see the date and time of the last successful backup.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

How much data transfer bandwidth does REXdesktop and Always*Safe require?

REXdesktop synchronization is especially efficient in its use of data transfer bandwidth because changes are transmitted at the data field level, not at the record or file levels, a huge benefit for our international customers where unlimited data plans are rare.

In addition to synchronization activity, the system periodically runs a full file backup for additional safekeeping.  A user can modify the frequency of this backup verification by adjusting the option found in the Profile section (select Profile from the main menu).  Additionally, a backup can be run manually using the Backup To Web command on the main menu. Actual data usage varies by user, database size, and the user's activity level. It is a good idea to reduce your frequency while traveling internationally to minimize data roaming expenses.

What is the REXwireless "Matrix" database?

REXwireless products are based on a high-performance relational database that we wrote from scratch for the BlackBerry environment called the REXwireless MatrixDB.  MatrixDB is unique in that it was designed to work well on small, battery-miser CPU's, without a lot of working memory, as found in wireless devices.  Additionally, the database was created with special features that allow it to synchronize with server-side database products.  MatrixDB offers great performance in a tiny footprint.

What is the best way to get support / what are the support center hours?

REXwireless provides support primarily by e-mail.  Using our website contact form or e-mailing the support center are the fastest methods of support, once you have reviewed our frequently asked questions list and our documentation at supportcenter-documentation.php.  REXwireless strives to return most e-mails within 4 business hours.

Are REXwireless licenses transferable from one BlackBerry to another?

REXwireless applications are licensed to a user, not a BlackBerry.  Licenses will transfer from one BlackBerry device to another if the user remains the same.

Note that only one device can be activated at a time.  Flipping back and forth between two active devices will destroy the integrity of your data backups and could potentially threaten the integrity of your data on both units as the system tries to synchronize the data.  REXwireless support will shutdown both units communications if the situation persists.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

I am getting a new BlackBerry - how do I migrate my REXwireless applications and data to the new unit?

The most important step is to execute final "Backup to Web" commands on your applications to ensure that your most current databases are saved on the REXwireless servers.  If your e-mail is staying the same on the new BlackBerry, our servers will validate your e-mail and password, then perform an auto-switch to the new unit.  If your e-mail is changing, e-mail the REXwireless support.center with the device PIN numbers of your outgoing and incoming BlackBerry devices (see BlackBerry Options / Status).  If you don't have your old PIN number, your previous activation codes are a helpful substitute.  We will switch the PIN numbers and e-mail back instructions to restore the databases on the new device and to delete the databases on the old device.

It is best to change devices during normal business hours in the U.S. for fastest service (The support.center is open Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, Eastern Time (New York), in the United States).

How do I upgrade to the latest todoMatrix or ideaMatrix software?

Upgrade your software by pointing your BlackBerry wireless browser to http://REXwireless.com/download.  The pages will walk you through downloading the software.  The current version numbers are displayed on the first download page. Sometimes BlackBerry browser need a menu / refresh to refresh the cache if you are upgrading. Your currently installed version number is found in the "about" menu command on the main menu on your BlackBerry REXwireless applications.

Recommended procedure:

1) Use the menu command "Backup to Web" to backup your database to our web servers before upgrading

2) Logoff REXdesktop.com if you happen to be logged on - do not log in until completing ALL steps.

3) Browse to http://REXwireless.com/download using your BlackBerry browser.  (If the website does not recognize your browser as a BlackBerry, check your browser options and make sure that your emulation is in fact set to "BlackBerry")

4) Download the software (existing users do not receive sample data)

5) Reboot your unit when prompted

6) After rebooting and checking your data, a "backup to web" is recommended - be sure to "allow" communications to the wwrex.com web servers if prompted by your BlackBerry.

7) You will then be running the latest version

How does REXwireless' money-back guarantee work for purchases through REXwireless' website?

We want happy customers. If you purchase our software and are not happy with it, we will refund your purchase within 30 days of your purchase, once our software is confirmed as deactivated on your BlackBerry device.

To initiate the process, please e-mail our support.center and request a refund.  We really appreciate you telling us why it didn't work out.  The date we receive your e-mail request must be within the 30 day limit (the actual de-activation and refund can take a few more days past 30, but that's OK - we are not that uptight and refunds are rare for us anyway).

We will send you directions to complete the deactivation on your BlackBerry and then we will process the refund via Paypal.  Do not de-install the software or we will not be able to verify the deactivation and will therefore be unable to process the refund.  If your request comes in during the business day (Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, Eastern Time (New York), in the United States), refunds are typically completed within 8 business hours.

I purchased todoMatrix a while back and now want to buy ideaMatrix (or vice-versa). Can I get the SilverMatrix 20% bundle discount after the fact?

Not exactly.  The best discount we offer is buying the SilverMatrix bundle up front, because it adds no additional cycles on our support center staff.

However, if you purchased todoMatrix (or ideaMatrix) through REXwireless direct within the last 60 days, you can request the "Retroactive" bundle discount by e-mailing our support.center.  The way it works is that you purchase the second application at the full price and then send us the e-mail. We will check the date of your first purchase, and if it is less than 60 days prior AND if the purchase was made through REXwireless direct, we will process a $15 partial refund against your second purchase, usually within one business day.  Its not quite as good a price as buying the SilverMatrix 20% bundle up front, but the Retroactive bundle comes pretty close.

Please note that if you purchased either application via a third party retailer, we are unable to offer the bundle discount retroactively.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

I purchased your software but have not received an activation code. How quickly is it sent?

I purchased your software but have not received an activation code. How quickly is it sent?

On the purchase of a single activation code for todoMatrix or ideaMatrix, we issue and e-mail the codes within one minute. Please check the e-mail address that you used to make the purchase, which may differ from your regular e-mail address (people often forget which e-mail address they used when they signed up for a payment service like Paypal, sometimes years earlier). Also, sometimes spam prevention software intercepts the activation code and puts the e-mail in a spam folder, so please be sure and check that if it does not appear in the correct inbox. There are sometimes delays in the e-mail infrastructure as well, but usually, e-mail is delivered within 15 minutes 99% of the time.

If you purchased more than one copy with one transaction, there may be a delay in receiving all your codes until the next business morning (Eastern USA).

Does REXwireless offer "sales" or promotional pricing from time to time?

No. We never discount just to discount.

We feel our pricing is fair, given that the average user reports that they have saved dozens of hours per year and have been far more effective in their life using our software. We do offer earned discounts for corporate purchases, when a company buys a minimum of 50 copies of a software title.  Discounts are sometimes available for industry affiliates.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

What are corporate volume codes?

REXwireless offers corporate volume recap codes for certain companies that have purchased more than 50 licenses of software.  These codes offer negotiated volume discount pricing based on a company's volume with REXwireless.  Purchasers must have a matching e-mail domain for the company discount code that they are using for the discount to apply.

Does REXwireless have a customer referral program?

We do not have an official referral program but have been known to add complimentary time on a person's REXdesktop access for word-of-mouth assistance. All help is truly appreciated.  There is a "refer a friend" menu function provided in our applications to make recommending our software quick and easy.

If you do not remember your password, contact the REXwireless support.center for a password reset.

What are communications used for and should I allow connections in my firewall software to wwrex.com?

REXwireless applications are designed from the ground up to use communications in our always connected BlackBerry world.  Communications are used for synchronization to REXdesktop, Always*Safe backup, e-mail to delegates, and much more.  If a person prevents communications, they will not be able to take advantage of many REXwireless features and they will expose themselves to database loss if their unit is lost, stolen, or damaged.  We recommend choosing "allow" connections to our wwrex.com customer servers.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

What are the minimum requirements for a device to support REXwireless software?

REXwireless applications require a minimum of RIM BlackBerry Operating System 4.0 or greater (see BlackBerry Options / Status for your OS release version). Additionally, a minimum of 600K free memory is needed to successfully download and install one of our applications. If your unit has an early operating system, check with your cellular service provider for available upgrades.

Does todoMatrix support synchronization with Microsoft Outlook?

Not at this time.  We provide our own web-based REXdesktop interface instead.

We do provide one-time import from Outlook tasks if someone has a lot of tasks in Outlook and wants to transition over to todoMatrix and our REXdesktop web access after purchasing our software. We will provide an enhancement to synchronize with the standard BlackBerry tasks applet (which in turn synchronizes with Outlook and other programs) in the May / June 2008 timeframe.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

Does REXwireless support PC's, Apple Macs, and Linux systems?

Yes.

Most people install our applications over-the-air wirelessly so whether you have a PC or a Mac does not matter for the BlackBerry software installation component.

Our REXdesktop.com web access uses the latest web browsers from Microsoft and Mozilla to work with your databases.  On a PC, either Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or Mozilla Firefox 2 work best, while Mozilla Firefox is best on the Mac or Linux platforms.  The Mac Safari browser does work but has a few formatting incompatibilities and is not recommended for REXdesktop access.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

Do REXwireless applications get backed up to my local Windows PC when I run a BlackBerry backup using my BlackBerry-included desktop manager software?

No.  We provide wireless backup with our complimentary Always*Safe backup subsystem.  The wireless method is automatic and most customers are never far behind, a nice benefit in case a unit is damaged or lost.  Most users only backup their BlackBerry at their PC once weekly, and sometimes, less often than that.

^Top of FAQ       ^Menu

How much communications bandwidth do REXwireless applications require?

We are very efficient on the use of transfer bandwidth as we only submit changed fields to the server and vice-versa during normal operations.  Always*Safe backup runs periodically, and the average user's database is approximately 50K.  However, this bandwidth usage number can vary quite a bit depending on how extensively a person uses todoMatrix and ideaMatrix.

A person that is very concerned about bandwidth use can reduce the frequency in the Profile section.  REXwireless recommends leaving the setting at default for anyone on an unlimited data plan.

How does synchronization to and from REXdesktop work with my BlackBerry REXwireless databases?

Multiple items work in concert to synchronize your BlackBerry with REXdesktop. It is important to understand that synchronization is initiated by the BlackBerry end.

The primary sync is the application knowing data elements have changed on your BlackBerry resident todoMatrix or ideaMatrix.  The application will initiate a sync with the server at first idle / holster of the device.  Every sync is bi-directional, with BlackBerry changes going to the server and REXdesktop changes going to the BlackBerry.

The next level of sync is the 90 minute "heartbeat" sync: While your BlackBerry is in a good communications online state, the unit will check in with the servers to see if there is anything to be synchronized from the server end, approximately every 90 minutes.  The user can speed up the process by requesting an immediate sync by using the "Sync Now" menu choice, found on the main menu on the BlackBerry resident todoMatrix or ideaMatrix application. Syncs usually take less than 10 seconds and definitely less than a minute, so any Sync Now that is stuck more than 60 seconds should be aborted and retried. Please note that aborting a sync or backup can take up to 120 seconds.

Another function called the e-mail trigger sync request (trigger sync) is also at work. When a person logs off their REXdesktop, the server sends messages to the BlackBerry via e-mail, requesting that todoMatrix or ideaMatrix sync themselves the next time the unit is holstered / idle. If this trigger sync is working as designed, you will NOT see the e-mails in the BlackBerry inbox, because todoMatrix and ideaMatrix will see the e-mails intended for them and delete them when they come in so that the BlackBerry owner is not disturbed by extra "e-mail inbox" alerts. However, these messages often do show up in a person's regular PC e-mail inbox so it is a good idea to filter these messages into a trash box if doing so has no effect on your BlackBerry receiving them.  A trigger sync is also sent when a person clicks on the "Request Sync" button on REXdesktop.  If you are seeing trigger sync messages on your BlackBerry inbox, then this component is not working properly on the unit.

In short, if a BlackBerry is not synchronizing, the Sync Now menu choice on the BlackBerry offers the best positive confirmation of whether it is working properly.

Can I change the e-mail address my REXwireless application is using?

Our applications may be configured to use any valid e-mail address on your BlackBerry unit.  The e-mail to be used is selected upon first startup; therefore, changing addresses would require a person:
a) run a successful "backup to web" to make sure the database is saved to the servers
b) do a "delete database" on the BlackBerry application to clear out all data and personality
c) rejoin as an existing user, picking a new e-mail identity, using the correct password

Please note that reloading one application may in fact change your e-mail ID for any other REX BlackBerry applications found on your unit within a few hours.

Can I turn off the opening "tips" that pop up?

No. But you can slow down the frequency.

REXwireless uses the tips to deliver new announcements to our users. When we surveyed a group of users, the overwhelming response was that users prefer the tips versus e-mail for announcements.

Starting with 2007.09.xx.xx releases, the tips can be slowed down a lot in Profile/Preferences. In previous releases, tips were configured to trigger only once per an eight hour period. In the future, we hope to offer a "don't show me this tip" again feature. But, as of right now, there is no way to turn off the tips.

How do I upgrade to the REXdesktop compatible release?

Check your "About todoMatrix" or "About IdeaMatrix" menu commands to see what version number of the application you currently have installed. Versions that start with 2006.12 or 2007.xx are compatible with REXdesktop. If you have an older version, you are welcome to upgrade by pointing your BlackBerry wireless browser to http://REXwireless.com/download. Please see our recommended upgrade procedure.

To initialize the REXdesktop, you must perform a "Backup to Web" command from the main menu of your todoMatrix or ideaMatrix application. After successfully backing up on a REXdesktop capable release, you may logon with a PC or Mac at http://REXdesktop.com using current level Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. Apple's Safari browser is not fully supported at this time.

How can ideaMatrix be used as a BlackBerry based daily journal or diary?

ideaMatrix is completely freeform so it can and is being used as a BlackBerry based journal / diary by a number of people. The recommended approach is to set up drawers by year (ex. 2007-journal) and then folders by month (ex. 2007-01), then a new note each day. Most journal users take advantage of the BlackBerry autotext shortcuts for timestamp and datestamp (LT + a space and LD + a space) to time and date stamp new entries within a note.

Can my personal assistant use REXdesktop to keep me up-to-date?

Absolutely. REXdesktop allows more than one logon for a user account at the same time. Your personal assistant can be logged on to your todoMatrix and ideaMatrix and add, modify, or delete entries for you. By pressing the "Request Sync" button on the desktop, the assistant can notify your BlackBerry that new data is available for synchronization.

What's REXwireless coming out with next?

Lots of stuff, most of which we prefer not to announce until it's out. Don't write us for dates, because we have learned our lesson on announcing a date and then watching it slip.

Items on our agenda include:
a) a synchronization interface to BlackBerry tasks applet, which will in turn sync your BlackBerry REXwireless applications with Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Novell Groupwise, and PocketMac,
b) language translations of our applications
c) two new applications, and
d) a workgroup version of todoMatrix that will allow a number of BlackBerry units to work together delegating tasks between the devices.

Let us know what you are interested in - we love hearing ideas from our customers.  REXwireless forums is a great place for suggestions.

REXdesktop Top Question

How do I access / activate the REXdesktop?

Access is automatically activated for customers that have a) the latest BlackBerry software levels installed on their BlackBerry device and b) have communication successfully configured and working properly.

1) Please compare the version number you see on your todoMatrix or ideaMatrix in the "About todoMatrix" or "About ideaMatrix" menu choice, found near the bottom on the main folder-view menu, to the version numbers listed at http://REXwireless.com/download

2) If you are current, please run a "backup to web" command, also found on the main menu, to ensure that your data is initialized on REXdesktop.  Then, logon at http://REXdesktop.com

If you find that your software on your BlackBerry is back-level, you must upgrade first, then run a "backup to web" after the upgrade to initialize your REXdesktop data, before logging on.  It is important to follow each step of our recommended upgrade procedure.

Security

How does REXwireless protect the security of my data on REXdesktop or Always*Safe auto-backup?

Customer data on our servers is encrypted beyond the standards set by the U.S. Department of Defense.  If our servers were ever compromised, the encrypted files would prevent customer information from falling into hacker hands.

Data access is controlled by user name and password, as well as BlackBerry device PIN.  We suggest using passwords with a combination of upper and lower case letters including some numbers and special characters to ensure better security.

When REXdesktop is used, a customer's information is "checked out" and loaded into server memory.  Changes are written back to the encrypted store as they are submitted.

How does REXwireless protect the security of my credit card information?

REXwireless uses the largest and most trusted internet provider of credit card transactions, Paypal (an EBay company) for complete outsourced handling of financial transactions.  REXwireless never sees or stores your credit card information as all those details are handled and secured by Paypal.

What does the private flag do in ideaMatrix?

The private flag allows a person to mark a note as private and require the re-entry of their password before viewing the private note.  Private notes are not additionally encrypted but rather cloaked from over-the-shoulder prying eyes.

We plan to offer an encrypted flag in the future.  The encrypted flag will offer true security at the note level but notes will no longer be found by the Indy*Search find system when they are encrypted.

We will not share any e-mail data with any third party.  Additionally, we will not send unsolicited ads to our customers.  Our complete e-mail privacy policy is found in the REXwireless agreement which is presented to a user when he or she downloads our software.

In short, we hate e-mail spam just as much as you do.

How does REXwireless assure the security of my data if I'm accessing REXdesktop from a public internet terminal such as a PC at a tradeshow, an airport, or cyber cafe?

We offer the ability to access REXdesktop using SSL. Point the browser to https://REXdesktop.com instead of the regular http:// version of the website.

This comes in handy in many instances - for example, if your employer records what happens on internet sessions, SSL should prevent your employer from seeing your private data, unless they have taken extreme measures like installing keystroke capture software on the PC you are using.  Using SSL is a good idea when you are connecting with your laptop over public internet access points such as hotels and airports.

Please be aware, however, that non-reputable public internet terminals can have keystroke logging installed. Always consider the company that is providing you the terminal for access because https:// does not stop a key logging piece of software.

Where is my data encrypted and where is it not encrypted in the REXwireless overall system?

REXwireless applications are currently designed to offer good security against the most prevalent hacker threats; however, note that our applications are not currently competing in the high-security "password vault" space. We strive to balance productivity and application functionality vs. reasonable security.

REXwireless's Always*Safe subsystem backs up data to our servers to protect the user against BlackBerry damage or loss, and to protect data during software upgrades and users changing to new devices. Our servers reside in large commercial datacenters which have comprehensive physical security schemes and 7 x 24 security personnel onsite.

The most prevalent threat is a hacker gaining access to a server. To address this concern, REXwireless user application data is not stored in a relational database format on the servers. Rather, the datafiles on the server are encrypted to triple DES encryption standards. If our servers were ever compromised by a hacker, the datafiles of the users would not be compromised.

When a user logs onto REXdesktop.com, his or her datafile is "checked out", decrypted, and loaded into server memory to enable the user's access and modification. Every time there is a modification, the change processed and written back to the disk in an encrypted format. The data is removed from server memory upon log-out of a session. The database is not loaded to the local PC or Mac using the browser to access the session.

At the BlackBerry end, the user's REXwireless database is not encrypted. When a record is modified, the change is transmitted to REXwireless servers, where the server writes the change in encrypted format to disk. The privacy feature in IdeaMatrix is a simple cloaking scheme and does not encrypt the user's data.

At this time, changes transmitted between the BlackBerry and REXwireless servers are not encrypted enroute. This is quite common practice - consider that most e-mails that travel between companies travel without encryption. Please note that the majority of REXwireless transmissions are simply the field that changed, not the entire record or database.

Troubleshooting

I am having an issue.  What is step one?

If you have a working todoMatrix or ideaMatrix but are having an issue, the first step to make sure that you are on the most current software upgrade release.

Many problems are resolved by simply upgrading so the first step is to check your installed software version number (see the About todoMatrix or About ideaMatrix menu choice near the bottom of the main menu on your BlackBerry) and compare it to the current version numbers displayed at http://REXwireless.com/download webpage.

If you are out of date, we suggest upgrading and seeing if your issue is already fixed.

After installation, I'm seeing an hourglass every 3 - 5 seconds and my BlackBerry is sluggish. What's happening and how can I resolve the issue? My voice dialing application is no longer working correctly as well.

The phonelog application security setting is preventing our application from "seeing" if your phone is in use on a phone call or not. This is important because we don't want to trigger alerts while you are on a phone call.

To resolve the issue, navigate to BlackBerry Option Settings Icon, then Security, then Application Permissions.  Scroll to our application, then click and select Edit Permissions.  Use the space bar to expand the Connections section, then change the Phone line item to "Allow".  Click on the menu to Save.  The hourglass should stop, but you may have to remove the battery to reboot the BlackBerry if the setting doesn't take effect immediately.

I installed your software but the icon won't start up whatsoever. What is wrong?

This usually happens when a BlackBerry has its third-party Application Security settings set to "deny" as a default.

To resolve the issue, navigate to BlackBerry Option Settings Icon, then Security, then Application Permissions.  Scroll to our application, then click and select Edit Permissions.  Use the space bar to expand the Connections, Interactions, and Data subsections, then change the line items to "Allow".  Click on the menu to Save.  Then, try our application icon again.  If it does not work, you may have to remove the battery to reboot the BlackBerry as the security setting may not take effect immediately.

I want to use my BlackBerry as a PDA without communications enabled.  How can I use REXwireless software?

We are sorry but our software simply cannot be initialized and activated, nor upgraded or backed-up without communications fully-enabled on your device.  There is no way to use our software in your scenario.

I installed your software but I can't seem to get communications running. What should I do?

First, make sure that your BlackBerry Firewall software (found in Blackberry Options / Security / Firewall) is either disabled or at least reset. Then, try all three TCP options (TCP Normal, TCP BES, and TCP Direct), followed by WAP (find your service provider on the list). If this does not work, your TCP may not be configured properly. There are three places that TCP can be misconfigured - a) your unit, b) your BES enterprise server (if your BlackBerry is on a BES system), or at your cellular service provider. TCP settings are typically found in BlackBerry Options / Advanced Options / TCP (the location of the TCP settings may vary depending on the level of your BlackBerry operating system).

Two forums (http://www.BlackBerryForums.com and http://www.pinstack.com) do a good job of trying to keep valid TCP APN settings by service provider. We suggest searching both for the TCP APN settings for your provider (ex. TCP APN T-Mobile US).

If you find custom WAP settings for your service provider and not TCP settings, we offer the ability to input custom WAP settings as the last choice under the WAP subsection in todoMatrix or ideaMatrix communication settings.

If you are still unable to solve the issue, please contact our support.center via e-mail.

One last note if
a) TCP Normal is not working, and
b) if you are not in the U.S. or Canada, and
c) if you are not on a corporate BES server:
Certain cellular service providers, mostly in Europe, require that a user request "BIS" (BlackBerry Internet Service) service be activated on their BlackBerry account (usually no additional charge).  We suggest contacting your service provider's BlackBerry technical support department and asking if BIS is active on your account.

When I try to have my unit communicate with REXwireless servers, I get a "Permission Denied" message.  What should I do?

Permission denied messages usually result from settings on your particular BlackBerry that are not allowing the communication to continue.

The most common culprit is the BlackBerry Firewall software.  Go to BlackBerry Options / Security / Firewall, and execute a Menu-Click, "Reset" command.  This allows the Firewall to prompt you regarding whether to allow communications to our wwrex.com servers the next time you try to make the application communicate.  Pick "allow connections" to wwrex.com and your problem may be resolved.

Another area to look at is the security permissions by application if the firewall reset does not solve the issue, also found under BlackBerry Options / Security / Applications / Edit Permissions (on menu) / Connections.  Set all the Connections section for our applications to "allow".

I'm trying to install wirelessly using the BlackBerry internet browser but the REXwireless download page says I'm visiting with a PC.  Why is it not recognizing my BlackBerry browser?

This usually happens if you are using a different browser than the standard BlackBerry browser that comes with most carriers' BlackBerry units, or if the browser is set to some other emulation other than "BlackBerry" in the browser options.  We have noticed that certain carriers such as Cingular have been shipping units with two browsers on the unit, so trying with both browsers is important.

We suggest double checking the options in the BlackBerry browser menu.  If you change options, a refresh of the http://REXwireless.com/download page may be required.

Wireless over-the-air install does not seem to be working.  What can I do?

Sometimes a BlackBerry is configured to not allow wireless program download and install, often by a company BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) administrator.  if you are finding this is the case, navigate to the http://REXwireless.com/download page using a PC that has the BlackBerry desktop manager software installed on it.  We have a process in place to allow you to install our applications using a USB cable connection to the BlackBerry unit.
